YAHOO!! INDIGO POINT IS COMPLETED

by | May 30, 2022 | Uncategorized | 35 comments

Thanks to the tireless efforts of our contractor, ADC Construction, its numerous dedicated workers and ADC’s Project Manager, Roshan Meade, Indigo Point was fully completed in mid-May 2022, one year after work began. As many of you know, I have spent the majority of my time over the last year overseeing and trying to assist in the project. I think it was worthwhile to be present to answer questions and orchestrate the delivery of the many owner supplied items; however, I sure missed being home with Brigid and Summer. I think it was easier for me during the days since I was so busy. Brigid and Summer were busy at home; Brigid with her many activities including, pickleball, knitting, needlepoint and quilting; and Summer with her new jobs at The Phoenix Art Museums’ Fashion Institute and at Ford/Robert Black Modeling Agency. At night, it was tougher for the girls to not have our time together to visit. We would talk on the phone most nights, but I was so worn out (and maybe had a drink or two) and with the three hour time difference, I was not the best visitor. The girls were real troopers during this past year and were big contributors to the success of the project. You are sure to notice all of Brigid and Summer’s beautiful interior design touches.

In the last three months a lot of things came together: (i) all of the cabinetry and furniture arrived and was put in place, (ii) the landscaping was installed, (iii) the internet, security and audio visual components were installed, and (iv) the site was cleaned and construction debris and equipment were removed. At this point, there are only a few minor items left on the punch list. The job now is to start enjoying this beautiful place with family and friends.

The photos that follow will give you a feel for the completed Indigo Point. Once the landscape takes off and starts to mature, Indigo Point is sure to become even more idyllic.

Invitation

In my mind, the purpose of having Indigo Point is to have a special place to enjoy with family and friends. I have very fond memories of the special times had on board M/V Sunshine with family and friends. The goal now is to create more special memories at Indigo Point. Accordingly, please accept this as my invitation to you to come visit us at Indigo Point. Brigid and I don’t have a set schedule of when we plan to be at Indigo Point. Please let me know when you might want to come visit and that may well help us decide when to be at Indigo Point.

Things to Consider

Weather

Days are almost always between 78 and 82 degrees, all year around. It is a tad bit hotter in the summer because the winds are calmer, but that makes for better power boating. The wind is almost always blowing the rest of the year. There are certain periods that have higher winds. There are the “Christmas Winds” that may come anytime between December and February. There are the “Easter Winds” that can hit any time during March and April. As a result of high winds and heavy seas, there may be a set of consecutive days when it is not advisable or comfortable to go out cruising. Then we can hike, wade and swim from shore and go to town.

Hurricanes

The official hurricane season runs from June to November. That said, June, July and August are some of the best times for power boating because the winds and seas are generally calmer. We just keep an eye on the storm systems coming off the west coast of Africa. The month that locals tend to worry about and focus on is September. It was the month when Irma hit in 2017. It typically takes 5-7 days for a tropical storm to come across the Atlantic to the caribbean. Storms are watched constantly; so, there is little if any risk of getting hit by surprise.

Travel

There are no direct flights from the US to the British Virgin Islands. Thus, you will need to come to either San Juan, Puerto Rico or Saint Thomas, Virgin Islands, both of which are US territories. You will need a US Passport to enter the BVI. It takes about 4-6 weeks and costs about $200 to obtain a US passport (fees, photos and shipping).

There are more daily flight options flying through San Juan. The following airlines have flights to San Juan (SJU): American, Delta, Untied, Alaska, JetBlue, Southwest, Frontier, Spirit and Sun Country.

There are fewer daily flight options arriving through Saint Thomas, US Virgin Islands. The following airlines have flights to Saint Thomas (STT): American, Delta, Untied, JetBlue, Frontier, Spirit and Sun Country.

Once you arrive in San Juan you have the option of three commuter airlines to fly to the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS) on Beef Island in the BVI: Cape Air, Silver Airways and InterCaribbean Airways.

If you arrive in Saint Thomas, you have the option of two commuter airlines: Cape Air and Silver Airways. From St. Thomas, you can also take a ferry or a water taxi to the BVI. The ferry or water taxi is less expensive than flying, but you may need to spend a night in St. Thomas to make the times work. In addition, the water taxi may not run if the seas are too heavy.

Some major US Airlines code share with local carriers so that you can check your bags all the way through to EIS, the BVI airport. It is worth checking this option; however, I have found it less expensive to pick up my bags in San Juan or St. Thomas and then check my bags direct with the commuter airline.

Depending on where you are coming from, it will take a day to a day and a half to get to the BVI. I personally take a red-eye from Phoenix and arrive the afternoon of the next day. Brigid and Summer prefer flying a part of the way to Miami on day one. They spend the night and then depart the next morning for San Juan. They then take a commuter airline from San Juan to EIS, the BVI airport.

What to expect once here

As with visits to M/V Sunshine, once you are at Indigo Point we will cover food, beverages, fuel etc. Lunch and dinners out run from $12 on the low end to $50 on the high end. Everywhere is casual, you only need to pack shorts, tees, sundresses, and swim wear. If you want to go to a fancier dining room, you would only need dress shorts with a polo shirt or sundress. The people are friendly and speak English, although some speak a creole version that can be a bit hard to understand. The currency is the US Dollar. There is no crime to speak of and no panhandlers. The roads and dwellings are mostly second world. The BVI is not a high end place, although it has its high end resorts.

The typical day would be a boat trip mid morning to a mooring ball to go snorkeling, then cruising on to a lunch spot or beach bar. Perhaps another snorkel or beach bar stop on the return trip. Return to Indigo Point mid to late afternoon. Then happy hour and a light casual dinner. The water is warm, 79- 84 degrees. It is refreshing to jump in, but then feels very comfortable. There is good snorkeling with lots of coral and colorful fish. We are in the process of accumulating snorkel gear, so you don’t have to buy any. There are beaches on either side of our property where you can wade in and sip on a drink or go for a swim. Sadly, there are mosquitos, but no poisonous snakes or dangerous animals. We have plenty of repellent and sunscreen.

      Roger and Barbara,
It surprises me at times that we did get it all done in a year, especially with the pandemic causing so much trouble. My contractor and his workers were very talented and hard working. In the early days, a crew of 25-30 would work seven days a week, 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. That would not have happened here in the states. What is more, they were happy to have the work and were so diligent about it. We have certainly been fortunate.
I hope you can make plans to come visit soon. I think you will enjoy it.
      Hugs.

This is sooooo beautiful you guys! thanks for sharing the photos and information with us! Can’t wait to see it in its completed state! The furnishings are beautiful and every window seems to take my breath away… do you have oxygen tanks for that sort of problem?

      Tom,
Thanks for all the encouragement and support. We can’t wait for you to come down and stay. Wish you and Renee could be there next week when we meet up with Dylan.
We don’t have oxygen, but the air is fresh and clean. We can give you a zap with the defibrillator which might do you some good.
      Hugs.
