THE REBIRTH OF INDIGO POINT

by | Jun 1, 2021 | Uncategorized | 19 comments

Indigo Point is a beautiful 4.4 acre site on Great Camanoe Island in the British Virgin Islands (BVI). Indigo Point was improved with a home and a guest cottage. Sadly, these structures were severely damaged by Hurricane Irma in 2017. The property was put up for sale by the owners, Ron and Claire Rowe, who had lived at Indigo Point almost full time over approximately 18 years.

Brigid and I fell in love with Indigo Point the first time we saw it in February 2020. We contracted to purchase it and our purchase was completed on New Years Eve, December 31, 2020.

This blog is my attempt to share some of the history of Indigo Point, our rather spontaneous decision to purchase the property and the progress being made to bring this lovey homesite back to life. This blog is meant for our family and friends. It is my first attempt at a blog and I will try hard to avoid being long winded.

Here are some photos of Indigo Point taken before Hurricane Irma.

Here are photos of what Indigo Point looked like when we first saw it after Hurricane Irma in 2017. Irma was the worst hurricane or cyclone ever recorded in modern time. Winds speeds were recorded over 250 mph in BVI. It passed right over Tortola and Great Camanoe.

The roof was torn off most of the house.
The hurricane shutters and most windows were blown out or damaged
The interior was destroyed by the elements

Although the hurricane damaged the structures, the natural beauty of this ocean side retreat remained and was what attracted us to the site.

In the next edition, I will tell the story of how we found Indigo Point.

Thank you for your time and interest.

Dan

  18. Dan, GREAT BLOG, and my wife Tina and I have been looking into possibly purchasing a property in the BVI’s. We are nestled here on Cape Cod in Massachusetts, with the boating and beach lifestyle we’ve come to love. We thought what a better place to spend time in the off season, if not skiing, would be in the BVI’s. We have been chartering with the Moorings on a 54 powercat off season and fell in love with all the islands down their. We started looking into Great Camanoe, because it just so happens that our friends and neighbors up on Cape Cod, The Bechard’s, also have had a home on Camanoe for I think 30 years now. Tina and I are headed down to the islands on March 21-April 2, and from March 21-24 we’ll be staying at Long Beach on Tortola, but trying to schedule with Maritha a visit to Camanoe. Would like to know more about your experience. david.downey09@gmail.com

  19. Dear Dan, we are friends of Ron & Claire, especially his daughter Kim as I am a fellow harpist. We were very sad to learn Ron passed away at his PA home on August 10. We spent several holidays at Indigo Point and enjoyed seeing your blog. Warm wishes, Elizabeth

First, an important note. Kimberly Rowe and Hugh Brock, the daughter and son in law of the previous owners, Ron and Claire Rowe, helped me get my blog in a more professional state. They have both been instrumental in making the blog easier to access and making it look...

After the sailboat trip with the Craig family, we returned to Phoenix, Arizona on January 15, 2020. It was not long before I was on BVI Sothebys International Realty's website looking at the properties for sale on Great Camanoe Island. The person who I met on the...

How did this ever come about? Part 1

There were a lot of events and "meant to be" occurrences that brought us to Indigo Point in the British Virgin Islands. The first was more than 63 years ago, before I was born. My mom, Donna, was 8 months pregnant with me when she and my dad, Glenn, plus my two older...

Indigo Point – Demolition Phase

Indigo Point – Demolition Phase

Out initial plans for the reconstruction called for saving some of the existing structure. We thought there would be a cost savings by doing so. After we had completed our plans and were out to bid, one of the contractors said in passing, "You should tear it all down"...
